My clients always want to know what their chart says about relationships. Which sign suits them best sign for business, for marriage, and so on. If they are already in a relationship they want to know what drew them together, what keeps them apart, and what the future holds for them. Astrology has lots to say about all that and a lot more.

Let’s start with the most basic relationship astrology: which signs get along and why. This information is by nature more general, but actually can be quit enlightening. You have to remember, you are not just your Sun Sign. There are 9 other major planets, a couple of small ones like Chiron, your Rising Sign, and a whole lot of other factors that make up YOU.

Think about it like a recipe for food. If you are a Pisces, we know it’s a fish recipe, but that’s about all we know. All of the other ingredients in your chart are just as important as the Fish, but without the Fish there is not dish. If you are a Pisces and happen to have a wild and spicy Leo Moon with a daring Aries Rising, perhaps you are creative type Fish with a real attraction to fiery, out-going people, rather than a gentle, shy retiring fish that prefers a quieter life.

But I digress. Now we’ll go back to the basics. It all starts out with the elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.

The Fire Signs are Aries (3/22-4/22 approx.), Leo (7 22-8/22 approx.), and Sagittarius (11/22-12/22 approx.). Fire is extroverted, ego-oriented, assertive, energized, and enthusiastic. Fire can also be tyrannical, self-centered, and pushy.

Next are the Earth Signs, Taurus (4/22-5/22 approx.), Virgo (8/22-9/22 approx.), and Capricorn (12/22-1/22 approx.). Earth is more introverted, physical, practical, and productive. They can also be materialistic, negative, procrastinating, and stuck in the mud.

The Air Signs are Gemini (5/22-6/22 approx.), Libra (9/22-10/22 approx.), and Aquarius (1/22-2/22 approx.). Air Signs are intellectual, mentally driven, socially oriented, inventive and sometimes witty. They can also be emotionally detached, all talk and no action, and superficial.

Last but not least we have the Water Signs: Cancer (6/22-7/22 approx.), Scorpio (10/22-11/22 approx.), and Pisces (2/22-3-22 approx.). Water Signs are more introverted, sensitive, creative, and emotionally driven. They can also be manipulative, over-sensitive, secretive, and moody.

The general rule is Fire Signs get along with other Fire Signs and also Air Signs. They are a natural match. Both tend to be more extroverted and high energy. Earth Signs get along well with other Earth Signs and with Water Signs. They are both more introverted and security oriented.

This does not mean that any you can’t get along with just about anyone. It’s just a general guideline. But if you are a sensitive Cancer Woman who is constantly attracted to pushy, less-sensitive Aries men, and you find you are constantly getting your feelings hurt, it might be time to change gears and look for a nice, steady Taurus.

Strangely, we are often very attracted to certain signs and not others. Sometimes this works out great, sometimes it’s not so great. I had a Libra client who had been married 3 times, and every one of her ex’s was a Scorpio. Ultimately, she would feel controlled and smothered by the intensity of these Scorpio men, and the relationships broke apart. Being an Air Sign, my Libra client really wanted a relationship with someone she could talk to and be “friends” with. Scorpio, being and intense more introverted Water Sign, often does not express much verbally. This was another big problem for Miss Libra. She was attracted to the depth and the strength of Scorpio, but couldn’t ever feel comfortable with the control issues and the lack of communication.

This can be valuable with our kids as well. Let’s say you have a sensitive, watery little Pisces boy or girl. They tend to be a little shy and somewhat clingy to mommy. This can sometimes get in the way of their social development, school, and friends. So do you try to push them out there, make them more assertive, criticize them for being moody? Of course not. Maybe your little Pisces needs to be more independent, but you will probably have to be a bit more patient. Pushing them into competitive sports like soccer might not be the best choice either. Something more individually oriented like martial arts, swimming, or gymnastics will probably work better in some cases. But with Water Sign kids, you don’t want to give in to their moods and manipulations either. There is a fine line to respecting their sensitivity and cow towing to their every mood.

Just knowing the basic nature of the elements of each sign can actually help in dealing with people. Going deeper into the specific nature of each sign will help even more. This can give you an edge in business, your personal life, and with children, as I mentioned.
