6/2/04

As some of you might know, the planet Venus, goddess of love and beauty, ruler of graceful Libra and artistic, nurturing Taurus, is about to take center stage in the heavens on June 8, 2004. This rare event is known as a Venus Occultation, which is basically like an eclipse, as Venus will actually pass across the Sun and will even be visible in some parts of the world. If you are ready to pick up and fly to Australia you can probably catch it in person. The rest of us will probably have to see it on TV or the Internet. This event happens about every 121 years and it happens in pairs. The June 8th is the first of the pair, the second occurring 8 years later, in 2012.

So, what does it all mean? This particular Venus Occultation occurs in the sign of Gemini, the twins. The Sun and Gemini will line up in a conjunction at 17º’s Gemini, both in opposition to the planet Pluto at 20º’s Sagittarius. The Sun is a masculine principle, signifying identity and self-awareness. Venus is a feminine principle, symbolizing the emotional center, relating, and creative, receptive forces. The pairing up of the Sun and Venus is usually thought of as harmonious, creative, loving, social, expressive, prosperous, and perhaps a bit self-indulgent. This sounds very good for a shift in consciousness towards compassion and love. It also seems to point to an elevation of the feminine principle and the role of women. Let’s hope. We could certainly use a little more creative, balanced male/female energy on the planet right now.

The Gemini part of the equation suggests mental creativity and advances in the areas of communication and transportation. Perhaps in the next 8 years wireless communication will become even more amazing. They’ll probably start implanting microchips in people’s heads so we can talk to someone on the phone by just thinking about them. Oh, wait, we can already do that psychically! But what I’m really hoping for is mass-produced automobile that does not use fossil fuel. We are practically in the middle of World War III over oil right now, so I’m putting the fossil fuel issue right up at the top of my Venus wish list.

But what about Pluto? Remember, he’s definitely a big part of the mix on June 8th. So let’s break it down. When the Sun opposes Pluto the intensity rises. Pluto is the god of the underworld, the ruler of Scorpio, and in general, one powerful, sometimes-Badass kind of guy. No offense to Pluto, but anyone whose ever gone through a long Pluto transit knows he’s an “all or nothing” kind of force that takes no prisoners. Pluto is about the core. The deep and powerful urges from the epicenter of human consciousness. He rules death and rebirth, endings and new beginnings. Pluto is a force of transformation that often works in a relentless, obsessive kind of way. Issues of control, domination, violence, and even criminality are part of Pluto’s domain. And yet, there is a cathartic, shamanistic, and regenerative side of Pluto that is truly profound. So, like I was saying, when the Sun is in opposition to Pluto people will struggle for power, they will try to dominate one another, they will be obsessed with their goals, they will go through endings, they will be pushed towards new beginnings. If people use Plutonian energies for the good they can be unstoppable. If they use it for negative purposes, they can also seem unstoppable. Of course, I’m cheering for the team that would like to be unstoppably good.

The Pluto factor in the chart for the Occultation certainly seems to point to the need to address the violent, willful use of power in the world. It is the polarization of love and caring that is at odds with the forces of power and domination. The transit may bring the issue much more to the forefront in some way, but perhaps that is what is needed to get the attention of the world. I’m not trying to be gloom and doomy here, I’m just thinking out loud. Since the Sun and Venus opposing Pluto is one of the most prominent aspects in the chart for the Occultation, I would wager that the themes I’ve mentioned will be very prominent for some time to come. Perhaps the seeds for healing and change will be planted at this time. Perhaps awareness will shift. And yet many in the world will struggle and fight even harder.

When Venus opposed Pluto the passion and emotion of the goddess are pitted against the voracious lust for power of the dark lord. Eros and Thanatos, Love and Death, entwine and battle it out. Emotional struggles abound. Relationships are tested. Jealousy and manipulation run rampant. Well, maybe it’s not that dramatic, but it certainly points to the possibility of extremely emotional actions that could make diplomacy hard to come by. This combo could certainly bring highly charged relationship issues to a head, either personally, or globally. Once again, I know this is just a transit occurring on June 8th, but I’m giving it a wider sphere of influence because it’s happening during a rare and portentous event. Some astrologers might think this a bit experimental, but I’m willing to put it out there as a possibility.

So, when you look at the big picture, the chart for the Venus Occultation is loaded for bear. It certainly could be positive, but I have a suspicion it also could bring key events to the boiling point in the Middle East and elsewhere. It also could be the beginning of a major shift and transformation that will mobilize people to do good in the world. The Moon on June 8th will be moving into the sign of Pisces, getting very close to volatile, revolutionary Uranus. Jupiter in Virgo will be in a loose opposition to Uranus as well. This also adds more of a tense charge to the whole pattern. Things will be stirring up. It’s up to all of us to use the energy in a positive way. Actually, I’m really kind of excited about the whole thing. Even though I always play Devil’s Advocate I do believe the heightening of Venusian power will be a good thing, even with Pluto in tow. Pay attention at any key events in your emotional life that take place this coming week. It could be fate tapping you on the shoulder.

In your own life, you may wish to meditate about finding your passion and breaking old patterns in relationship that have been tying up your energy. I think the week of the Occultation could be a brilliant opportunity to tap into the Universal flow and access some really deep healing concerning love and relationships. The planetary vibes could be extraordinarily energizing for your own creativity. I would like to suggest that the 8th of June would be a great day for a ceremony, ritual, meditation, or prayer to activate your latent Venus energies and create your own personal transformation. You might want to make your own “Venus Wish List”. Write down some things you would like to bring into being in your life that relate to love, creativity, harmony, and compassion. Where do you need more love in your life? What would you like to study or practice that will allow your creativity to flow? Who do you want to share your heart with on a deeper level? Find a spiritual focus and tune into this powerful planetary event to lend power to your wishes.

All in all, next week should be pretty interesting. I have a feeling is you have planets in your chart around 17º’s or Gemini or Sagittarius the Venus Occultation might have a big impact on your life in some way. And guess who fits that profile to a tee? John Kerry, that’s who! His Sun is at 18º’s Sagittarius and his Moon is at 17º’s Gemini. That’s about as close as it gets! It certainly seems that this astrological event may propel John Kerry’s fate in one direction or another. It will be interesting to see.

On that note, I’d like to do a little bit of a recap on the election. Everybody keeps asking me what I think. What I think honestly hasn’t changed a whole lot, but I’d certainly like to talk about it more, since I’ve studied it quite a bit. So here’s the deal:

George W. Bush is a Cancer Sun, born on July 6th, 1946. He has Leo Rising and a Libra Moon. Right now, as we speak, transiting Saturn is sitting right on his Sun. Ouch! He is beginning pressured beyond the beyond. Astrologer Rob Hand points out that this period relates to energies that were put in play 14 years ago when Saturn opposed his Sun. The Saturn period Bush is now experience will either help him reach a climax with his goals, or cause him to realize he has failed. He is certainly aware of his own failures now, more than ever, but he is also holding on to what he has been successful at. Bush is actually a very patient man in some ways. Right now we are seeing him under extreme pressure, and he’s still treading water, from what I can see. Bush will certainly have to make friends with Saturn no matter what happens. Saturn will be a strong influence in his chart for the next few years. That tends to make me think he will be re-elected, as it would correspond with the tremendous responsibilities he will have in his second term. Now, those of you who are not Bush fans, don’t get all excited. I am just analyzing current events based on what I see, not what I would prefer.

Anyway, Saturn is busy trying to flatten George W at the moment, and testing his metal at every turn. Perhaps he’ll be able to cut a deal with Saturn and start repairing some of the areas of his life that need it. But Saturn is not nearly done with him. He truly has a mountain to climb. The President will have his Saturn Return beginning right before election time. This is a review of all he has done over the past 28 to 30 years or so. It’s all about karma, baby, and fate. The Saturn return marks a major transition in life. Things that have gone well can become elevated. Things that are not right can become devastating. Saturn presents some of the most important challenges and lessons we can learn in life. It’s about taking responsibility for all that we are, and all that we do. It represents the effort we put forth in the world and the structure we create. This will certainly be one of the most important years in Bush’s life, one way or another.

But wait! There’s something else that really stands out in Bush’s chart around election time. It’s Jupiter. Now Jupiter is Saturn’s opposite in many ways. Saturn is always pointing out problems, demanding reparation, and handing down sentences. Jupiter brings in opportunities, happiness, and pats on the back. The Grim Reaper meets Santa Claus. And Jupiter will be rocking and rolling over all of Bush’s Libra planets in the 3rd this November. In fact, Bush will be headed for his Jupiter Return, which is considered a very fortunate period. The 3rd house rules communication, and Bush’s Moon will also be aspected by Jupiter shortly after Election Day. To add to this, both the Sun in Scorpio and the Moon in Cancer will be supportive of Bush’s chart on Election Day. To me, this all signals a victor’s chart. Interestingly, Laura Bush’s chart is also highlighted on Election Day in a very favorable way. She is an 11º Scorpio Sun with a birthday two days after the election. On Election Day, the Sun lines up with her Sun and trines her Pisces Moon, and the Moon in Cancer trines both her Sun and Moon. Saturn will be transiting her 7th house, indicating lots of stress from her partner, but that would figure.

So what about Kerry? Well, he’s a Sagittarius with a Gemini Moon, as I might have mentioned. He was born on December 11, 1943. Kerry has been going through some very powerful Pluto transits over the past few years. This is definitely a life-changing period for him. Obviously, Pluto had given him the drive and determination it takes to make a bid for the presidency. When I was looking at the original contenders for the Democrat nomination, I choose Kerry early on because of his chart. Pluto is about power. It will stop at nothing to get what it wants. It’s passionate, fired up, and strong. Pluto has been hanging around John Kerry’s Sun for over a year now, giving him the obsessive drive it takes to achieve what he has achieved. The good news is, we can see what a strong person Kerry is. Having Pluto conjunct your natal Sun and in opposition to your natal Moon is no picnic. A lesser person may have had a complete breakdown. He really turned the Pluto energy into something amazing. But Pluto ain’t done with him yet. On Election Day Pluto will be within 2º’s of Kerry’s Sun and in a loose opposition of his natal Saturn. It’s the Pluto/Saturn opposition that is the clincher. Pluto/Saturn opposition usually indicates loss and surrender. Sorry guys, that’s what the book says. It’s a classic astrological pattern and I’m just calling it as I see it. Now, on the lighter side, Jupiter will have crossed his Mid-Heaven in the Summer, which will have helped his popularity quite a bit, but I don’t know if it will be enough. Neither the Sun nor the Moon will be particularly helpful to Kerry on Election Day. The Sun in Scorpio will transit Kerry’s 12th house, which is considered a house of endings. The Moon in Cancer will transit Kerry’s 8th house on that day, which certainly can put a person in the public eye, but it is the house of death and endings. Now, the Moon in Cancer will have just past George Bush’s Sun, which is a symbol of new beginnings.

There are always differences in opinion when it comes to astrological interpretation. I usually stick to fairly “classical” analysis. I know there are some astrologers who will disagree with me, but that’s what makes it interesting. I will probably have more to say on this topic as time goes on. I hope you have found it informative. Good luck to all and have a good time experiencing the Venus Occultation!
